The flu season is here again and, let’s be honest, no one wants to miss class or work because of an illness. The influenza virus is typically active throughout the entire year, however, it’s most prevalent during the fall and winter months. Experts say that the flu season typically begins around October and peaks in February. This year, as it is every year, it’s important to stay healthy and prevent the spread of the flu. Here are 5 tips for staying healthy during flu season.
Here are Some Tips for Staying Healthy
1. Get the Flu Vaccine
Flu vaccines help your antibodies combat each year’s flu virus. Because it takes your body around two weeks to create the antibodies needed, it is recommended to get your vaccine before the end of October. While you can still get a vaccine later, if it is before the February peak, it’s best to get it as soon as possible.
Most people find it easiest to get their flu vaccine at a local pharmacy or at their doctor’s office, but did you know that some workplaces with an on-site clinic or on-site nurse offer flu vaccinations? Consider taking advantage of such programs.
2. Wash Your Hands
You’ve probably heard it a billion times, but the advice should be heeded: “wash your hands.” This is a simple way to get rid of germs. Throughout the day, you touch so many surfaces that could have viruses and other harmful bacteria on them. And if your hands are unwashed, you can potentially spread the flu by touching your eyes, mouth, and nose, or by preparing food and touching other people. It’s essential to make washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds a healthy habit especially during the flu season. If you can’t wash your hands, use hand sanitizer—it’s better than nothing.
3. Clean and Disinfect Surfaces
Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces in your home or office reduces the spread of germs and bacteria. This includes disinfecting doors knobs, desktops, countertops, and phones.
4. Get Enough Sleep and Rest
“Get some sleep” – this concept sounds simple, but it can be hard. A good night’s sleep may be more powerful than you think. Your immune system is stronger when you sleep enough and is less likely to become ill during the flu season. And, interestingly, your body responds better to flu vaccines if you get plenty of sleep.
5. Stay Hydrated
Drinking more fluids can boost your immune system function and help fend off the flu and other illnesses. It also helps your body circulate blood better and fight viruses. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
