As the winter months approach, flu season does too, which is why it is important to protect yourself and others by getting your annual flu shot. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the flu shot has been shown to reduce the risk of having to go to the doctor for the flu by as much as 60%. However, many Americans still opt to skip their annual dose due to the fear of the side effects. From body aches to low-grade fevers, the flu shot side effects are mild and the benefits of an annual flu shot far outweigh the risk of getting sick.

Most Commonly Reported Flu Shot Side Effects

These flu shot side effects are mild and experienced similarly by children and adults.

Injection Site Reaction
  • Like any vaccine, you will most likely experience a reaction at the injection site. After the shot, you may experience redness, warmth, swelling, or some soreness. These typically last only about 2 days. To help reduce soreness, try taking ibuprofen or Tylenol before the vaccine.
Fever
  • A low-grade fever of 101°F or less is reported in 1% to 2% of those getting a flu shot. Similar to injection site reactions, the fever should go away in a day or two.
Headaches and muscle soreness
  • This typically happens on the first day following your shot and will go away within a couple of days. Having soreness is normal and means that your body is creating antibodies for the flu.
Dizziness
  • Some people may experience dizziness or fainting following their shot. This is most common with individuals who do not do well with needles. If you tend to get dizzy when getting a shot, be sure to sit during and after receiving the vaccine. The nurse administering the shot will monitor you to ensure that you’re not having an allergic reaction.
